About Us

When I was a little girl growing up in Australia, holiday themes sometimes seemed a little, well, farfetched!  Why did the Easter Bunny bring us chocolate eggs, when farmers were busy trying to eliminate his country cousins?  Where were the Easter blossoms that I read about? And most importantly of all, why was Father Christmas so overdressed?  Any normal person would die of heat stroke, wearing an outfit like that in the middle of summer!   And, for that matter, what was all of this white snow stuff on Christmas cards?  Living in a subtropical climate, I had never seen snow.

Then my family moved to Boston, in the USA, for two years.  Suddenly, the holiday traditions and stories started to make sense.  Father Christmas (Santa Claus) was dressed so warmly because snow is COLD!  And the Easter Bunny and Easter blossoms are a sign of abundance and life after the long cold winters.  It was in Boston, too, that I was first introduced to Halloween, a young child's delight.

Yes, most of the holiday traditions of the international English speaking world relate to life and history in the world's far North.  And yes, many of these customs and traditions fit strangely in other seasons and climates.  But the magic of these holiday traditions lives on. And ShiningRise.com is my tribute to those traditions.

Many writers, artists, and craftsmen have celebrated traditional holidays with their creations, and I've built a small collection of their work, using their books, pictures and figurines to illustrate articles and holiday stories. This site is supported by sales of these items. There's no hard-sell.  But if you've enjoyed reading some part of this site, a visit to one of the sponsoring merchants will be much appreciated, and, of course, even more so, if you see an item you like, and choose to buy!
