National Customs
An enormous number of customs surround Christmas, and vary from country to
country. In most Western countries, Christmas celebrations have both
religious and secular aspects. Since Christmas has become associated
with the Northern Hemisphere winter, motifs of this season are prominent in
Christmas decorations and in the Santa Claus myth. Many aspects, such
as the Christmas tree, the Yule Log, and the
giving of presents, were taken
from the earlier pagan holiday of Yule and the traditional celebrations of
the Winter solstice.
Christmas Traditions around the World
Christmas traditions around the world are as colorful and have as much
tradition as we do in America. In India, they celebrate Christmas in much the
same way as we do. It's an official holiday, people attend church, and Hindu
children that go to missionary school participate in the festivities. The
educational system takes a holiday beginning right before Christmas and goes
through the first few days of the New Year.
CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS
We're all accustomed to it by now. Carols played on the airwaves. Shopping
malls filled to the rafters with eager patrons scouring the racks for nice
bargains and wondrous finds. Students taking a break from the rigors of
school. And the colors of green, red and gold dominate our surroundings.
Indeed, Christmas is the most distinctive of seasons, with all that it means
and with how it is celebrated. In the West, we have come to know Christmas as
the season of giving

Christmas Caroling: Singing in the Snow
Everyone can enjoy the sweet sound of children of all ages singing their
little hearts out to a lone guitar-no matter how out of tune they might be.
They don't have to be children either, adults can have some mighty fine
voices too. Carolers never quite have that same heartfelt warmth about them
like on television, so don't allow that to put you off your game. Usually
once you get going, you don't want to stop right up until the hot chocolate
is brought out.
Christmas Stories
The yearly holiday of Christmas has
inspired many writers and producers to create fictional Christmas
stories that try to capture the "spirit" of Christmas in
the form of a modern-day fairy
tale. Over the years, a large number of fictional Christmas stories have
been written, usually involving heart-touching tales that involve a Christmas
miracle.
Christmas Stories and Activities for the Teacher
You can always tell Christmas is just around the corner when you go to your
favorite store and see reindeer-oriented decorations hung up right beside the
Halloween ones-in September. As educators around the globe, it's our
responsibility to push open the wonders of the world to our students,
especially when the holidays come around. Students in younger grades
constantly get distracted and we're the ones that get to scrounge around for
fun activities to amuse them with.
