Christmas DecorationsNorthern European homes were traditionally decorated for Christmas with evergreen boughs, and garlands, vines and wreaths made from a variety of evergreens such as holly, ivy and mistletoe. An evergreen Christmas tree was decorated with Christmas ornaments and candles.
Today, electric Christmas lights, have replaced candles on the tree, for safety reasons but Christmas trees and Christmas decorations remain very popular.. Beautifully wrapped Christmas presents may be displayed under the tree, making them part of the total decorative effect, until they are unwrapped, usually on Christmas morning. Religious families may include a nativity scene as part of their Christmas decorations, and these scenes are a prominent feature of the Christmas decorations in many Christian churches. Although less traditional, flowers can make beautiful Christmas decorations. In Northern latitudes, where it snows at Christmas, flowers are rare at Christmas time, although they may be imported from warmer climates. In the USA, a traditional Christmas flower is the poinsettia. Other Christmas flowering plants in the Northern Hemisphere are amaryllis, hellebores (Christmas rose) and Christmas cactus. Many cities enter into the Christmas spirit by putting up Christmas trees, lights and decorations for the Christmas season.
