Christmas Lights

Christmas lights (also sometimes called fairy lights or twinkle lights) are strands of electric lights used to decorate homes and Christmas trees during the holiday season. Christmas lights come in a dazzling array of configurations and colors.

It is said that Martin Luther started the tradition of decorating the Christmas tree with lighted candles (symbolizing the light of Christ).  Today, the candles on the tree are more likely to be electric, for reasons of safety, although candles are still much used for Christmas decoration in safer places around the house.

In North America and to a lesser extent the United Kingdom, it is traditional to decorate the outside of houses with large numbers of lights, including (sometimes) lit-up models of sleighs, snowmen and other Christmas figures.  Cities often get into the swing of things, hanging Christmas banners from street lights or placing Christmas trees in the town square.
