GiftmasGiftmas is a term used (often sarcastically) to distinguish between the secular American holiday celebrated yearly on 25 December and the traditional Christian holiday of Christmas that falls on the same day. The current use of this term seems confined mostly to atheists, agnostics, pagans, and others with non-Christian beliefs who nevertheless wish to celebrate on December 25 with non-religious traditions such as Santa Claus, gift-giving, decorating a tree, turkey dinners, and the like. However, the word may also be used by Christians who wish to dissociate the highly commercialized secular holiday from the religious holiday of Christmas, even if they continue to celebrate both. Note that certain religious groups may celebrate Winter Solstice/Summer Solstice, which falls around the 21st of December in the northern hemisphere/southern hemisphere, as another alternative to Christmas. The 8-day Jewish holiday of Chanukah also falls during the same time and has its own gift-giving tradition.
