And the angel said unto them,
fear not for behold
I bring you good tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all people

Mention Christmas and people would instantly be reminded of gifts, lavish feasts and a wild series of parties with friends and acquaintances. It is these associations that has established Christmas as the premiere holiday for each and every year. It is not uncommon to find people who count Christmas as the highlight of their 12 months. In fact, survey says that Christmas is the second most eagerly anticipated occasion every annum, next only to the respondent's birthday.

But are these descriptions the true essence of Christmas?

Christmas is more than just a celebration, it is also a commemoration. Though rooted in religion as the recognized birth of Jesus Christ, Christmas has evolved into a universal spirit of kindness and love. It has become a season of sharing, where people would get together to celebrate their blessings despite the differences between them which might have hounded them in the past months. Christmas has also become a time when we could make people happy by giving them some presents to let them know that they are loved, remembered, and most of all, cherished. It has also transformed into a celebration of family and friendship, as no one would really want to be alone come Christmas day. We always make it a point to be with the people dearest to our hearts come Christmas eve and Christmas day itself.

There are some criticisms that claim how Christmas has become commercialized in the past decades. This occasion, it seems, has been used as a marketing vehicle by many retailers and producers the world over. Though this point is arguably true, the true meaning of Christmas still shines through the glitz and the glamour of the season.

And you could celebrate Christmas in the most meaningful way possible, the way it was meant to be observed. Here are some suggestions on how to spend the best Christmas by being true to its essence.

  • Christmas is a time for charity. You could host a Christmas party for the more needful members of society. With your family or friends, you could arrange a warm dinner for homeless folks. Or you could prepare an entertaining program for people in senior homes. You could even collect some donations from the people you know to make some children in an orphanage of your choice really happy this Christmas season.

  • Christmas is a season for peace. Try to patch up your differences with the people you have had rocky relationships with throughout the year. There's no better time to forgive and forget that Christmas.

  • Christmas is a time for benevolence. A simple act of kindness can go a long, long way, especially during this season of seasons. Doing a good deed, which isn't necessarily confined to distributing gifts, would make someone else feel loved and treasured. And there is no greater joy than in making someone else happy.

  • Christmas is a time for giving. Again, you don't necessarily have to purchase some gifts. You could embark on making one for your intended recipient. Often, it is those gifts that are specially made, that can't be bought anywhere else, that are most cherished by people. Make them feel your love by giving them a gift from the heart.

  • Christmas is a time for service. Try doing something out of the norm for the people you hold dear. You could clean the house, or cook dinner for them, or do their chores on their behalf.

Christmas has taken on so many meanings throughout the years, but some things remain universal. Christmas is celebrated only once every year. It's up to us to make it as meaningful and as memorable as possible.
