New Year's Day
New Year's Day is the first day of the year, in the Gregorian calendar. In modern times, it is January 1. In most countries, it is a holiday. It is still celebrated as a religious holy day on January 14 by those who still follow the Julian calendar such as followers of some of the Eastern Orthodox churches known as Old Calendarists.

New Year Resolutions
One universal tradition for New Year,  is the undertaking of what many people call as New Year’s resolutions. These are promises that would be for the betterment of yourself which you would promise to comply with for the coming year.

Historic New Years
Around 715 BC the months of January, February and Mercedony were added. The first month was named after Janus, the two-faced (forward and backward looking) god of gates and transitions in general. Mercedony was a leap month which was used only in leap years. Because consuls were chosen in January, and because years were named after the consuls who served in that year, January became the de facto beginning of the year.

Hogmanay
Hogmanay is the Scots word for the celebration of the New Year in the Scottish manner. Its official date is the 31st of December. However this is normally only the start of a celebration which lasts through the night until the morning of the 1st or, in many cases, the 2nd of January.

Other New Years
The New Year is an event that happens when a culture celebrates the end of one year and the beginning of the next. Cultures that measure yearly calendars all have New Year celebrations.
