Easter BellsBells are rung in Europe throughout the year, but they are not rung on Good Friday or Holy Saturday. They are silent as a token of mourning for the death of Jesus. They are then rung on Easter Sunday as a celebration of Jesus' resurrection.
I think of the garden after the rain; There is a charming story associated with Easter bells in Southern Europe: The church bells, which had been ringing daily, would fall silent on Good Friday and Easter Saturday, out of respect for the death of Christ. Tradition had it that during this time, they traveled to Rome for the Pope's blessing, and they returned on Easter Sunday, bearing Easter eggs. Today, a related tradition continues in France: early on Easter morning the children rush into the garden to try to see the bells 'fly back from Rome'. As the small folk scan the sky for a glimpse of the returning bells their elders hide Easter eggs. When the bells finally ring, the children hunt for the Easter eggs
