Holy Saturday

Holy Saturday is sometimes referred to as Silent Saturday, as it is the day when Christ remained silently locked in the tomb. It is the day before Easter or Resurrection Sunday.

The Holy Water touched your face,
In symbol of New Birth
From this day forth, He'll guide your way,
Through all your years on earth.

Many churches start celebrating Easter late in the evening of Holy Saturday at a service called the Easter Vigil. In the Roman Catholic Church this is the most solemn Easter service. The vigil service leads up to a dramatic moment. The lights in each church are put out, leaving everyone in darkness. Then, the priest lights one tall candle, the paschal candle representing the light of Christ which has come into the world. The flame from this candle is used to light other candles held by worshipers, which symbolizes the spreading of Jesus' light throughout the world. In Eastern Orthodox Churches, the ceremony is timed so that the priest lights his candle exactly at midnight. After all the candles have been lit, the service becomes an Easter celebration, with joyous music and the reading of the Easter story from the Bible.

Traditionally, newly converted Christians were baptized at the Easter vigil, after having received religious instruction during Lent. They continued to wear their white baptismal robes for the following week, as a sign of their new life, and so the week beginning with Easter Sunday became known as 'White Week'.
