Scented Wax Bunny
You will love this wonderful scented-wax bunny! It makes a unique gift.
You can also use this technique on other types of stuffed toys, when Easter
is over. Scented wax teddy bears are very popular too and they are so cute.
You can make a large or small scented wax bunny, you just need to make sure
you have a pan big enough to completely dip your rabbit into the melted wax.
Warning! This bunny project is NOT for kids, because it uses hot
wax.
Material required:
- Wax or paraffin
- Scented oil
- Fork
- Rubber gloves (heat resistant)
- Stuffed rabbit
- Plate or coaster
- Dye (optional)
It is best to get a rabbit that is fur like and has removable clothing.
Also rabbits that have jointed movable arms and legs are much easier to
pose.
Be sure your rabbit is sewn together instead of glued. Anything glued
may come apart when submerged in hot wax.
Consider color also, plain wax will leave a white coating on your
rabbit, you may want to consider using colored wax that matches the
color of your rabbit.
Instructions:
Melt your wax in a double broiler. Add one ounce of scent oil per pound
of wax used. Remove from the stove and drop your bunny in and make sure
he gets completely covered with wax. Use tongs to turn him over to get
well coated.
Pull the rabbit out of the wax and squeeze out the excess wax while
wearing heat resistant rubber gloves. Place your rabbit on a rack and
let the excess wax drip off. Keep in mind this is a crucial time.
While the rabbit is cooling, the wax is hardening and if you wait too
long you may run into problems with getting your rabbit to pose or wax
dandruff may form. You can always correct these mistakes by redipping
your rabbit in melted wax.
Now get your rabbit posed so he can harden in that position. You may
need to rig up a way to support the head so it doesn't fall forward.
Also if your rabbit has long droopy ears, it looks better to lift them
away from the head a little so they aren't fused together when dried.
Use the fork and pick out the fur all around your rabbit's body. Do this
while his pose is hardening. If the wax gets too hard you will
encounter 'wax dandruff' when you pick. Your rabbit will become coated
with hard white flakes.
Try using a hair dryer to melt them away but if that doesn't work, dip
the rabbit back into the wax to remelt him and start over working faster
next time.
When your bunny has hardened into place, you can dress him up with cute
outfits or bows. Since his arms and legs won't be movable, you may have
to cut open the shirt or pants and then hot glue them back together.
Sit your bunny on a glass plate or coaster, prop him up on a doll stand,
or insert a loop in the head for hanging. Remember since they are made
of wax they may leave an oil residue if placed directly onto wood or
fabric and may melt if used as car fresheners and left in the sun!
Even though they are made of wax, they do have fabric cores so they
mustn't be used as candles or toys for kids.
As the scent wears away, bunnies can be refreshed by adding drops of oil
and air brushing with a blow dryer.
