White WeekWhite is the traditional color for Easter, signifying light, purity and joy. In most churches, the decorations are white, gold, or white and gold. White represents the angels who announced the resurrection, while gold symbolizes triumph.
Early Christians believed Easter, particularly the Easter vigil, was a good time to be baptized. They continued to wear their white baptismal robes for the following week, as a sign of their new life, and so the week beginning with Easter Sunday became known as 'White Week'. This week is referred to as 'Bright Week' in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. It is said that the Emperor Constantine ordered Christians to wear their best clothes at Easter, the holiest time of the year. Europeans came to believe that new clothing worn on Easter Sunday would bring good luck, while old or used garments would usher in a year of misfortune. The tradition of an Easter parade began with strollers showing off their new spring finery. The New York Easter parade was immortalized in Irving Berlin's song.
