Choosing Valentine's Day Gifts
Ever go shopping for Valentine's Day gifts and while in the check out lane nearly everyone has the same gifts? The men are carrying the typical heart shaped box of chocolates, silk or real roses, bathrobes and slippers, sexy lingerie. The women have gloves, boxers, coin trays. All to be received with a smile and a thank you kiss only to be nearly forgotten what holiday they were given.
Make this years Valentine's Day gift for your sweetheart memorable. One that they will brag about to their friends at work the next day and perhaps all year long! How can you do this? It takes a few weeks or maybe months to pull off, but it's really very simple. And not only can this apply to Valentine's Day but every gift giving occasion.
First of all you need to be taking secret notes on things that your significant other browses for while shopping. Guys, pay attention to the types of items she admires but never buys for herself. What is her favorite restaurant, what types of books do you see her reading, movies you see her watching. Does she enjoy crafts? What hobbies does she enjoy? Does she love to cook and often remarks of a specific type of kitchen item she wishes she had?
Ladies, you can keep track of similar things. Does he like woodworking? Fishing? Does he read novels? Golf? Watch sports with his buddies? Play sports.
You get the idea. So, now what do you do with this information. Below is a list of suggestions. Use the ideas exactly or tailor them to your needs. First choose a basket or box that will accommodate items that fit the theme you are trying to go with. Cover boxes with appropriate paper, (Valentines paper, Birthday, etc.), or for baskets, line with either shredded colored paper or if it's a kitchen or bath theme, line with a pretty kitchen or bath hand towel.
Theme Gift Baskets for the Ladies:
Cooks Choice: Visit your local kitchen gadget store and choose several unusual small items such as an ergonomically correct vegetable peeler, garlic press, napkin rings, high temp tongs, stainless steel whisk, etc. Things you feel she would enjoy using for the type of cooking she does. Also include an apron, if you can get it monogrammed that would be a nice touch.
Pampering Basket: At a bath and body store or department of her favorite department store, choose scents that are similar to what she chooses, (you may have to sneak sniffs of the products she has at home to know ahead of time.) or choose scents that you would like her to smell like! Pick a bath mitt, bath salts, matching lotions, hair clips or bands if her hair is long, If you want an added bonus, you could choose a nice soft robe to go along with the basket. Remember to line the basket with a pretty towel.
Craft Basket: Depending on the crafts she does, choose appropriate accessories for it. You can ask the clerk at the craft store what types of things a person that does her craft may need. Try to find out ahead of time what she already has or may need by maybe asking a girlfriend of hers.
Coffee / Tea Lovers Basket: Find a coffee mug or tea cup and saucer, line the basket with a pretty tea towel (a tea towel is basically a hand towel for the kitchen), a teapot if she doesn't have one and enjoys tea, flavored coffee's and teas and perhaps some biscotti or her favorite cookies.
Wine Basket: In an oblong basket line it with a pretty towel or cloth, lay a bottle of wine in it wrapped in another towel or in a wine bag, add a pair of pretty wine goblets and give with a small bouquet of flowers.
Manicure Basket: If she keeps her nails polished and manicured you could give a basket full of nail products. Strengthener, clear polish, files, clippers, etc. Any cosmetic department of a major store can help you or check at a nail salon for high quality products. I suggest you do not give colored polish unless you find out her favorite brand and color, as an alternative you can give a gift certificate so she can purchase her choices.
Gift Baskets / Containers for the Guys:
Golfer: Line a golf pail with shredded colored paper and add his favorite brand of golf balls, a pair of gloves, and maybe a gift certificate for a round or two at a local club.
Fisherman: You can find fish baskets at any store that sells fishing supplies, fill it with hooks, fishing line (be sure to find out the weight of line he prefers), and assorted accessories. Perhaps a new reel for his rod. If he frequently shops at a specific sporting goods store the clerks probably know him pretty well and could help you with choices.
Hunter: Line a cooler with a camouflage hankie and add a neon knit hat, camouflage gloves, sunglasses, binoculars, heavy socks. The sporting goods store clerk can help you choose items that a hunter needs most.
Coffee Lover: Line a wood box that he can use for perhaps his desktop or dresser as an organizer with a mans handkerchief, add a large coffee mug, a small can of his favorite brand and a dozen of his favorite cookies.
Artist: If your man is into drawing or painting you could choose art supplies in a caddy or the empty caddy and a gift certificate to the art store so he can choose supplies for himself.
