Decorating Ideas for Valentine's Day

Valentine's day is a fun occasion for decorating. A few well placed paper doilies and red paper hearts can fill a drab or simple room with romance in a hurry. The most festive looking décor will stick to the red, pink, and white color scheme. Don't overlook decorations usually used in other seasons, such as paper chains. Make construction paper chains in red and pink and drape lavishly from the ceiling.

A bulletin board can be decorated in a Valentine's Day theme as well. Cut flowers and hearts from pink and red construction paper and scatter them around on a white background. A fun way to cut out hearts is to cut smaller hearts from inside the larger hearts, making open hearts of varying sizes. These hearts can form picture frames for photos of special people in the school or workplace.

Finally, the letters for a slogan or saying can be cut individually from pink or red paper. The slogan can be something simple like "Be my Valentine." For a Sunday school classroom, the slogan could be a Bible verse about love, such as "Love your neighbor as yourself," or "God is love." For extra interest, the letters can be covered in white or iridescent glitter.

The background for a Valentine's Day bulletin board does not have to be white, however. An alternative to a white background is pink, on which red hearts and paper doilies can be scattered. Another kind of background can be made from a paper tablecloth in an all-over print of tiny hearts or cupids. Purchased card decorations featuring cupids, hearts, and romantic couples can be used as well.

New candles are unnecessary when decorating for Valentine's Day if there are leftover red and white Christmas candles. Candles can be trimmed if they are looking rumpled or run down. For candle holders, rings of small white silk flowers and greenery can be used for a simple natural look. Of course, silk red and white roses are also effective with candles.

Other Christmas decorations can be used when decorating for Valentine's Day. For instance, pearl garlands look elegant strewn about tabletops or around candle and floral displays. For a table centerpiece, a low collection of red and pink pillar candles can be surrounded by strings of pearls and white silk flowers on top of a large lace doily. Cut lengths of lace trim can be looped and strewn with the pearls for even more elegance. Fragrant red and pink potpourri can be strewn around, as well as sprinklings of iridescent glitter.

The food presented at a Valentine's Day party can form a part of the decorations. For instance, heart shaped cookies can be frosted in pink, sprinkled with multicolored sprinkles, and served from a heart shaped tray. Chocolates are always in order at such festivities, and can be served stylishly from the heart-shaped red satin box they came in. Crystal dishes and plain white china make nice serving vessels for other treats. Children's parties can feature individual paper cups filled with candy hearts, mini marshmallows, and chocolate chips, as a kind of Valentine's Day trail mix. Adult parties can include a rich chocolate mousse topped with whipped cream and chocolate curls.
