Easy Valentine's Day Kids' Crafts

In many schools and homes, Valentine's Day is a popular holiday for making crafts. While the theme of love and romance does not apply that well to children, February 14th falls at a time when children are tired of winter and need a diversion from the long days of uneventful school and cold weather. Valentine's Day is enjoyed by all because of the candy and crafts.

Many cute paper items can be made from construction paper. Red, pink, and white paper are usually predominate, but other colors can be used as accent colors. It is very simple for children to create their own heart cut-outs. All they need to do is fold a small piece of paper lengthwise and cut it in the shape of half a heart. When unfolded, the heart will be symmetrical. Some might be long and skinny while others are short and fat, but the heart shape will be easy to distinguish.

These hearts can be used to decorate many paper crafts. One art project many children enjoy is to create a valentine collage picture. First the child needs to cut many heart shapes in different colors. Then he or she arranges the hearts on a whole piece of construction paper. The hearts can be arranged in an abstract way, but it is very fun to arrange them so that they form little men or animals. For instance, a large upside down heart can form the fat body of a little man while a medium sized heart can form his head. Long skinny hearts can make his arms and legs, while small ones work for hands and feet. The tiniest hearts can be glued on for eyes, nose, and other facial features.

A Valentine's Day wreath can also be made from cut out heart shapes. The child starts with a circular piece of stiff paper, such as a paper plate. After cutting the center out of the heart, the hearts can be glued around the perimeter of the plate as desired. For a teaching project, the child can be instructed to write the name of someone he or she cares for or appreciates on each heart before gluing them down. Mother, father, teacher, and special friends are all possibilities to write on the hearts. The hearts can also be decorated with glitter or small stickers.

The paper left behind when making cut-out heart shapes can be used to create simple picture frames. The child simply chooses a picture that fits behind the heart opening. Next, they glue it in place, then add a layer of cardstock behind. In fact, this sort of small frame can have a magnet glued to the back and be used to decorate a refrigerator.

Valentine's Day breaks up the monotony of a long winter and brings children hope of coming spring. The red and pink hearts and decorations, coupled with candies and pretty cards make this February holiday a school time favorite.
