Easy to Make Heart-Shaped Valentine Cake

It is easy to make a heart-shaped cake for Valentine's Day. There are special heart-shaped cake pans on the market, but they are unnecessary. A cute valentine cake can be made with simply a square cake pan and a round cake pan, if they have the same diameter. Most kitchen cabinets are equipped with an eight or nine inch round cake pan, and an eight or nine inch square cake pan. These are all that are needed to create a heart-shaped cake.

The cake needs a large round or square platter to sit on. A round plate of fifteen inches in diameter can be used. An alternative can be made by covering a square or round piece of cardboard with aluminum foil for a home made cake platter.

The cake itself can be made from any cake mix. A pink flavor such as strawberry fit's the color scheme found in most Valentine Day decorating. Some cake mixes come in a multi-colored version called confetti or something similar which would make a festive cake for a party. A white cake would also look nice in the midst of Valentine's Day décor. The cake can be made from a mix or from scratch, but needs to be the proper size of recipe to fit into two round nine inch pans.

The round and square cake pans are greased and floured and the cake batter is poured evenly into them to the same height. The cakes are baked the appropriate amount of time and allowed to cool on a wire rack. Great care must be taken to remove them neatly from the pans. If the cake raised up high, the rounded tops can be trimmed off. The round cake is then cut in half to make two half moon shapes. These form the rounded top of the heart while the square cake is turned diagonally to form the point at the bottom of the heart.

The rounded pieces can be attached to the square cake with toothpicks or frosting, or can simply be placed next to it. The heart shaped cake is then frosted completely and decorated as desired. The frosting can be white or pink, from a can or homemade. The old-fashioned seven minute type of frosting is a good one for this type of cake, being light and fluffy.

The top of the cake can be decorated with sliced strawberries, pastel marshmallows, or heart-shaped candies. If pink frosting is used, it can be sprinkled lightly with coconut for a pretty valentine look. The cake can also be embellished with words, such as "Happy Valentine's Day" or "Be My Valentine." The letters can be made of red or pink icing from a tube.

The platter or aluminum foil covered cardboard around the cake can be garnished with pink-tinted coconut, silk or frosting flowers, or pastel colored candies. This pretty cake makes an attractive centerpiece for any Valentine's Day get-together.
