Fun Ways to Show Your Kids Love

Sometimes on Valentine's Day it is easy to forget to express our love to the children in our lives. It's a holiday that romance is emphasized and we forget that it's a time to show everyone that we love him or her, not just our significant other.

Sure the kids have their parties at school, exchange their cute little cartoon character cards with classmates and eat candy till they are sick, but what can parents and adults do to show them our love without spoiling them?

Of course there are the cards that can be purchased. But depending on the age of the child, they often will just end up throwing them away with nary a concern of what it says and means. Below are some age appropriate suggestions of showing our kids the true spirit of this romantic loving holiday.

Ages 3 - 4

At this age their focus is mostly on what you have to offer them to eat! But they are old enough to start learning that it is more important to give rather than receive.

Depending on the child you can either make cookies together or go out and purchase some already decorated ones. Let the child(ren) arrange them on pretty red plates and cover with plastic wrap. Have them create heart shaped tags or cards to put on each plate. Then take them to neighbors, shut ins, family, friends, etc.

After the giving is over, then its time to go home to share some milk and cookies! Talking about why its important to show love is good conversation over heart shaped cookies!

Some gift suggestions to this age range could be:

A stuffed animal with their name embroidered on it.

A book to read or coloring books about loving families and caring for others.

A trip to their favorite kids restaurant for lunch.

Create a tradition that is only for this day like maybe it is the only day of the year that get to go to a children's museum for example.

Ages 5 - 7

This is also a perfect age to bake and decorate the cookies together. Perhaps having a cookie-baking day with their friends and include their friends' moms too.

Then all going together to a nursing home or hospital and passing out the goodies. Be sure to check with the home or hospital to see what their policies are concerning food gifts, you may only be able to share them with staff not the residents or patients. If the nursing home or hospital is not an option, take them to neighbors, family and friends. Don't forget to save some for when you get home!

Also this age is great for making hand made cards to give with the cookies. Letting them decorate folded cardstock with themed confetti, alphabet stickers, glitter, etc. The local craft stores have a wealth of great options.

Then a party afterwards to share in the spoils and share cards made for each other.

Some gift suggestions to this age range could be:

A stuffed animal or favorite action hero

Take them to see the latest children's movie

Purchase their favorite movie on DVD

Ages 8 - up

Again at this age making cookies or other goodies to share is always a fun thing. The older ones can do more of it on their own and have a great sense of accomplishment by giving what they created. Which is the very essence of love!

Making home made cards at this age can be a treat too. Another great activity that is popular among this age group is scrapbooking. Gather together photo's of them and their friends and while you are at it, gather up all the friends too! Have the pages, papers, embellishments and other items there for them to create memory books of pictures of each other.

Or make it a family affair and have family gather together at one home to put together family photo scrapbooks.

If they are not interested in baking cookies to share, order out for a pizza!

Any age is perfect to make cards to send overseas to our troops as well. If you do not know anyone that is in the military and overseas, contact your local recruiters office and they can find you names and addresses to send things to as well as the regulations for sending food items.
