Tips on Buying Cut Flowers
What does the average consumer look for when buying cut flowers for someone else? Most anyone can call up the local florist and ask have a $45 arrangement sent to their loved ones, but what about those grocery store floral shops where you can find a floral gift?
What information is needed in order to find excellent quality and price? The selection can be overwhelming when picking out cut flowers and to most it can be very confusing.
Before choosing your flowers, ask yourself these six questions first:
- How much do I want to spend?
- Who is it for?
- What is the occasion?
- Do they have a favorite color?
- Where will it be the arrangement be sitting?
- Do they like fragrant flowers or non-fragrant?
How much do you want to spend should always be the first question. This narrows it down to the variety of flowers to buy. A bouquet of Orchids or roses might look enticing and will cost you from between $65 - $100, but a spring bouquet for $35 may do just fine. The fancier the flower the more it can cost.
Who is the arrangement going to can be very important because your boss might think of roses differently than your spouse. Is it a close friend or just an acquaintance in the hospital? If it is a loved one you are close to then choosing an arrangement with all or a few roses is appropriate. But if it is for an acquaintance or co-worker, carnations and daisy's are best.
The occasion is a must; a new house gift might be larger in size than someone recovering in the hospital, which should be smaller. If it is to celebrate someone's new house, you may want a larger arrangement that will look great on the mantle or their dining table as compared to a gift for someone in the hospital with limited space to have personal items.
Most everyone has a favorite color, and Mother Nature has covered the color spectrum. Remembering one's favorite color makes a great-added touch to the personal side of the gift. If you are unsure of their favorite, then try to go with something soft colored or neutral.
If you are in-charge of the office boardroom center table piece, then an arrangement over eight inches high will be too tall because you will not be able to see the other person across the table. You will want something that is similar shape to the table such as rectangular to fit a rectangle table, and so on. If it is a bouquet for someone in the office, try to stay away from overly fragrant flowers so you do not overpower them in their small office.
Oriental lilies are very fragrant, and to some people the smell is not favored. If lilies are a must try an Asiatic lily (day lily or tiger lily). The fragrance is minimal, and they are gown in many colors. If you think the recipient may have allergies you need to consult the florist on this and they can remove any pollen from flower stems to reduce an allergic reaction. Stick with non overpowering scents.
If your cut flower purchase is for an event that evening, and it needs to be impressive, then try to buy flowers that have open blooms. This will be very showy and the hit of the party, but remember the life of the bouquet will be limited. As for longer lasting blooms, try to make your purchase with blooms that are more "tight" or "closed", this gives them a few more days to open and will last longer. When choosing roses, lightly squeeze the fattest part of the flower, if it squishes easily then it is not a tight bloom and may not last long. If it is rock hard and has not shown signs of opening yet, it may not open very well at all. It needs to be a firm but slightly squeezable bloom.
Certain flowers might go with that special occasion, but it all comes down to the "thought that counts." Red roses are nice for that special someone, but maybe a few Dendrobium Orchids (which usually are around the same price) might do the trick too.
The most cost effective way to purchase cut flowers is to choose a pre-made bouquet. This is convenient because someone else has already made the decision on colors and varieties. Remember if the flowers are not in a vase already, then make sure to give them a fresh cut (usually one inch from the bottom) before they are placed in water.
