Valentine's Day is seen as a day for couples in love, but for those of you who are single it can be a dreaded day.

If you feel the whole world seems to be finding fault with you merely because you are not in a relationship, you need to throw away that idea immediately. The key is not to define yourself by your relationship status. Your relationship status is not your identity.

Single people can enjoy Valentine's Day just as much and make it about a lot more than just couples.

Here are some great ideas for singles looking for fun ways to celebrate Valentine's Day:

Go out by yourself or with a close friend or two and do something that you normally would not do. Make reservations at a new restaurant you've wanted to get to and get all dressed up for the occasion. Go ice skating at an outdoor rink. See a live theater performance or concert. Take a wine tasting class if any are offered near you.

Stop at a florist and purchase your favorite floral bouquet, this is one way brighten your day. Or maybe try a totally different hairstyle or have a manicure and pedicure. A little pampering goes a long way.

Have a dinner party and invite a few of your single friends. Have it be the kind of meal where everyone participates in the preparations when they arrive. It is a lot of fun to be in the kitchen together sipping your favorite wine while cooking. After the meal serve drinks and have some games to play. Or maybe you would prefer as a group to attend a theater to see the latest release. The idea is to do something unique to create a special bond with your friends.

Find out if there are singles parties being held at local pubs or by singles organizations. Many local churches offer single gatherings on a regular basis. Go stag or take a few of your friends along.

This is a good opportunity to visit with elderly relatives or anyone at a local nursing home or hospital. All too often they are forgotten on 'lesser' holidays and many are very lonely. Take flowers such as carnations to residents and candy to the staff members. Carnations are lest likely to cause any allergic reactions for the elderly and are inexpensive.

If you do not want to be around others then maybe staying home and watching your favorite movies, having your favorite snack foods and just spending time alone is what you prefer. Maybe just a hot bath and a good book will be all you chose to do. There is nothing wrong with wanting time alone, it is a precious commodity for most.

This may be a good time to sit and make your goals for your life. Set some new ones and review old ones. Write down some things about how you handled relationships in the past and where you may be weak. Write your strengths as well. Make a list of attributes you are looking for in a potential mate and what your guidelines are for future relationships.

If you are a single parent, spend the day with your child (or children). Do things that they enjoy to give them a sense of what the holiday is about, and that is doing things for our loved ones. If they are old enough, bake and decorate heart shaped cookies to take to shut-ins, neighbors, friends or relatives that reside in a nursing home or to other single friends or family members. Take them to the theater to see the latest movie or rent some favorites and just have time at home snacking and having fun together.

Valentine's Day can be about so much more than couples rekindling their love, candy hearts and mushy poems. It is about loving and caring for yourself and the others in your life that are so important to you. You need not dread it even if you are single, remember, you are never alone!
